The scientific objectives of atmospheric entry probes are to characterize the physical structure of the atmosphere and to determine its chemical composition. The structural properties of the atmosphere are determined with a combination of tri-axial accelerometers and temperature and pressure gages. The atmospheric thermal balance is measured with a net flux radiometer. The identity and relative abundance of the chemical constituents of the atmosphere are obtained by a mass spectrometer and a gas chromatograph. The cloud layers are located with a nephelometer. The operating characteristics of these instruments are described and the use of the data to increase our knowledge of the outer planets is indicated.
