The spacefaring capabilities for the U.S. that are spurring the need for development of a U.S. space station are reviewed, along with possible configurations and missions for the station. Space has resources such as microgravity, low temperature, high vacuum, and high levels of solar radiation, and experimentation is being performed on materials, biologic substances, and pharmaceuticals on board the Shuttle. Science experiments, particularly in astronomy, are possible in space that cannot be performed on earth. NASA design efforts are proceeding from the point of view of requirements over the next 25 years, with the station serving as a laboratory and an operations base. A manned station would coorbit with unmanned platforms in LEO delivered and serviced by the Shuttle or operated and maintained from the station. The station could also serve as a base for transfer to GEO or as a launch point for planetary missions.
