Oscillatory zoning of Mn in calcite was produced in free-drift solution growth experiments. The repetitive Mn-doped subzones, imaged using cathodoluminescence microscopy, are not correlated with external controls or perturbations, and they generally cannot be correlated between crystals. The fluctuations causing the oscillatory zoning form autonomously in a system far from equilibrium and represent an example of self-organization.
