According to Golitsyn's (1973) generally accepted hypothesis, the Great Red Spot is a gigantic plane vortex capable of sustaining itself through centuries. However, the physical conditions responsible for the elliptic shape of the vortex core are unresolved. Shuleikin (1964) has shown that the lines of flow in the cyclic flow system of the Atlantic Ocean are well approximated by a family of confocal ellipses. It is now shown that the same relations can explain quantitatively both the shape of the elliptic lines of flow in the Atlantic and the shape of the Great Red Spot.
