Ordinary chondrites are samples of primitive materials that have survived intact from the earliest period of solar system history. However, the physical characteristics of these meteorites have in many cases been modified by secondary processes. One example is a commonly observed planar fabric, defined by preferred orientation of non-spherical chondrules that comprise the bulk of chondrites. The problem of the origin of planar fabrics in chondrites is addressed in this study through TEM observations of olivine deformational features and by establishing a scale for shock intensity in these chondrites. The data provide strong evidence that impacts produced both foliation and magnetic anisotropy in chondrites.
