The origin of annual and subannual periodicities in F-region ionization is studied. Monthly median values of maximum electron density are harmonically analyzed for several high-latitude and auroral zone stations for each hour of the day during 1958 and 1964. A semiannual component exists in maximum electron density at all stations for the whole day in the high-sunspot year and during the daytime for the low-sunspot year. The annual component shows considerable day-night variation and north-south asymmetry during the high-sunspot year. It is observed that at night the amplitude of the annual component is large near 70 deg S and has a December maximum. It decreases toward the north and is negligible near 70 deg N geographic latitude. There is predominance of December phase globally. Various mechanisms are suggested to explain the results obtained.
