Speculations about life on Enceladus are necessarily based on our understanding of life on Earth. Unfortunately, the origin of life is not understood. There is no consensus theory for the origin of life nor has it been possible to create life in the laboratory. Therefore the practical approach to the possible of the origin of life on Enceladus is to consider the range of suggestions for the origin of life on Earth and how they might apply on Enceladus. We are on much surer ground in defining the growth requirements for life: liquid water, energy source, carbon and other elements such as N, P, S. It is likely that Enceladus has all of these. Anaerobic chemoautotrophic subsurface ecosystems on Earth are the best analog for microbial ecosystems on Enceladus. These microbial ecosystems consume H2 and produce CH4, suggesting possible detection strategies for future missions that sample the plume.
