A glow discharge plasma in a simulated Martian atmosphere has been used to approximate the electrical discharges that may occur as a result of tribocharged particles in Martian dust devils and dust storms. The emission spectrum of the plasma has been measured and many of the reactive species identified. The emission is dominated by the CO2+ A --> X system. There are also lines from neutral CO and the N2 C --> B and N2+ B --> X transitions. A number of organic molecules with different functional groups have been exposed to the plasma and their degradation products studied using infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The degradation products show varying degrees of oxidation depending on the starting material and functional groups present. Many organics produce higher molecular weight compounds during their decomposition. These compounds would have been difficult for the Viking GC/MS to detect. The results will be discussed in terms of the future search for organics on Mars.
