Possible transfer orbits for the second generation of Soviet Mars and Venus probes are examined. The parameters of the heliocentric transfer orbits are defined from the heliocentric positions of the earth and target planets at launch and rendezvous, respectively; it is assumed that the probe is launched at a tangent to the earth's orbit so that the earth lies at the perihelion or aphelion of the target planet. An estimate is made of the final masses of the probes using the Tsiolkovsky formula and the calculated delta-V necessary to put the various spacecraft into orbit around their targets.
