TITLE: Orbit-based Dynamical Models of the Draco Dwarf Spheroidal
ABSTRACT:
We construct axisymmetric Schwarzschild models of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy in an effort to determine the inner slope of the dark matter density profile. These models are also capable of determining the orbital aniostropy of the stars by fitting to kinematics in the form of line-of-sight velocity distributions (LOSVDs). We use individual radial velocities of stars to construct the LOSVDs, drawing on data from the literature as well as data taken with the VIRUS-W integral field spectrograph on the 2.7m telescope at McDonald Observatory. The advantage of this instrument is that its fibers are closely separated; this allows for simultaneous observations of many stars in the center of the galaxy. Using this technique, we observed 12 member stars within the central 20 pc of Draco. The LOSVD of these 12 stars is used to constrain the mass in the central region of the galaxy, and allows us to determine the inner dark matter density profile as well as investigate the possibility of a central black hole.
