Considerations bearing on the selection of the size and coupling method for fibers employed in spectrograph feeds are discussed. A key aspect of this problem is the need for the fiber to accommodate the area-solid-angle product of the light beam defined by the telescope and object. The derived signal-to-noise ratio is found to depend only weakly on the effective fiber diameter, allowing near-optimum observing efficiency over a wide range of seeing conditions and object morphologies. Finally, the distribution of galaxy angular sizes with respect to apparent magnitude is used in conjunction with models to show that multiobject fiber spectroscopy will be an extremely useful tool for galaxy observations fainter than 18 mag on large telescopes. Only two or three fiber sizes need be available to efficiently carry out the great majority of all prospective multiobject observing programs.
