About 105 stars must be chosen out of 2.5×105 candidates. Choice should conciliate conflicting constraints: on the one hand constraints coming from scientific targets materialized by selection committee priorities, on the other hand constraints resulting from the specific observing mode of Hipparcos which imposes severe limitations to the sky distribution and magnitude distribution of stars.
