Infrared Focal Plane Arrays are bidimensional detectors allowing images of large sample area and a large number of spectra with shorter acquisition time, higher spatial resolution and higher S/N ratio than single-element detectors. Imaging spectrometers based on focal plane arrays are now used in several biomedical applications to investigate different diseases by comparing IR spectra in healthy and pathological tissues. Moreover, the availability of brilliant IR synchrotron radiation sources against bench-top IR spectrometer allows diffraction-limited spectra with a higher S/N ratio.
