The construction and operating principle of a light gas gun with projectile velocities sufficiently high for meteoroid simulation are described. A radar system for measuring the projectile velocity was tested. Good performance is obtained, especially in the range of high projectile velocities, where opto-electronic methods cannot be applied. Powder nature and quality, drive gas nature, drive tube dimension, tunnel dimension, drive gas pressure, piston weight and projectile weight were varied. Drive tube diameter is of minor importance, but an increased length to diameter ratio of the tunnel gives higher velocities. The velocity of the drive piston is decisive for an optimum energy utilization. Projectile velocity increases with decreasing drive gas pressure.
