A computer model has been used to investigate the performance of a
Shack-Hartmann sensor operating under low light level conditions. The
trade-off between sub-aperture size and slope noise is examined in
detail and optimal sizes are determined for a number of imaging
scenarios. Our results are discussed in relation to related literature.
