A combined method of insertion into orbit of an artificial satellite of Jupiter with preliminary aerodynamic braking in the atmosphere is described, and problems of the optimal control of the spacecraft in the atmospheric segment are considered. For a wide range of initial conditions, solutions are obtained for variational problems concerning the minimization of energy consumption needed to produce the prescribed satellite orbit, and concerning the minimization of total heat fluxes and maximum temperature at the critical point. Numerical and graphical results are presented.
