A series of optical spectra of the LMC supernova 1987A, from February 25 to March 19, 1987, are presented. These are used to illustrate the evolution of the color, the spectral features, and the apparent expansion velocity of the 'photosphere'. While the spectrum is similar in several respects to previously studied type II supernovae, the large initial velocity, and the rapidity of the spectral evolution, are extreme.
