The present conference discusses ESA's earth-observation strategy into the 21st century, transmission schemes for optical telecommunications in space, the uses of telescopes as very high gain antennas, a multiplexer/demultiplexer and spectral isolator for optical intersatellite communications, an acquisition sensor for optical communications in space, a novel area array CCD sensor for laser-tracking applications, and a computation of the dynamical environment at the interface of an optical package mounted on a geostationary spacecraft. Also discussed are high power GaAlAs laser diodes useful for space applications, a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor for laser-diode testing, a GHz-range electrooptic CO2 laser modulator, a low noise receiver for free-space optical links, heterodyne and homodyne detection in optical space communications, optical communications for deep-space exploration, and a laser diode-pumped Nd:LiNBO3 waveguide laser.
