Photometric observations of Mars during the dust storm of 1971 are interpreted. Assuming that the dust particles are silicate in nature, two possibilities are considered for their mean radius: 1 micron and 10 microns. It is shown that only a mean radius of 10 microns is in accord with the observational results. In this case, the albedo for single scattering of light by the particles is determined as 0.87 to 0.99 for the spectral region from 366 to 625 nm, and the optical thickness of the atmosphere at the dust-storm peak is found not to exceed 40. The illuminance on the planet's surface during the storm is calculated.
