Venus is of particular interest for the study of planetary climates, atmospheres, and radiation budget conditions in connection with its special characteristics and a diameter which is similar to that of earth. The development of a model regarding the processes of radiative heat processes for a planetary atmosphere must be based on a knowledge of the optical properties of this atmosphere. The current investigation has the objective to provide the required information concerning these optical properties. The investigation is partly based on data obtained in connection with USSR and U.S. space missions. These data are supplemented by the results of studies involving a reproduction of Venusian atmospheric conditions in the laboratory. These results are extended by numerical modeling studies to take into account the actual geometric dimensions of the Venusian atmosphere. Attention is given to the chemical composition and structural parameters of the atmosphere, aspects of molecular absorption, the optical properties of Venusian clouds, and the radiative heat exchange.
