We present a technique for evaluation of the optical properties of clouds using visible images taken at ground level. In estimating the cloud optical thickness, the solar radiation scattered by the atmosphere is inferred from the surrounding sky brightness. The atmospheric transmittance is obtained using models that also involve data on the horizontal visibility and other meteorological parameters. The possibility of tracing out the cloud evolution by consecutive estimates of cloud optical thickness is demonstrated.
