Instruments for measuring the polarization of sunlight and the information on solar atmosphere obtainable from these measurements are discussed with reference to the broad classes of magnetographs, Stokes polarimeters, and off-limb polarimeters. Attention is given to the physical mechanisms of polarization and special problems of solar polarimetry through the earth's atmosphere.
