The first optical spectra of IRAS 09371 + 1212, showing no significant variability, no strong emission lines, and a normal spectral type near K 7III or K 7II, are presented. The optical polarization in V light has been mapped and displays values up to 46 percent a few arcseconds off the central star. The photometry in Johnson's VRI gives V = 10.97 and colors compatible with the above spectral type. Depending on whether the luminosity class is III or II, upper limits to the distance as 1.8 or 4.3 kpc are derived, and a lower limit of about 1 kpc is obtained from the undetected 10 micron flux by IRAS.
