The opportunity of the hard X-ray/gamma-ray astronomy mission SIGMA, on the Soviet satellite GRANAT, triggers the need for detailed optical observations of sources observed at high-energy by SIGMA and other facilities. There exists, moreover, a number of Einstein Observatory soft X-ray sources which are still unidentified. The ongoing ROSAT mission is further supplying new, interesting candidates. Thanks to a dedicated ESO Key Project, we have obtained imaging and spectroscopy data on several unidentified high energy sources selected because of their positioning. The results obtained so far help significantly in the understanding of the responsible objects, all galactic and compact in nature.
