A 143 min time sequence of video recordings of a sunspot with high spatial resolution was used to study the lifetime of umbral dots. Video recordings and white light photographs of many types of sunspot were used to study the morphology of dots. The half-life time of 'normal' umbral dots is found to be about 60 min, longer by at least a factor 2 than earlier believed. The umbral dots are found to be most often aligned. There exists also umbral dots with lifetimes longer than 140 min which are closely related to the formation of light bridges. Generally, our findings are in accordance with the theory of the origin of umbral dots, by Parker (1979).
