We request time on Blanco Mosaic2 to acquire deep multiband imaging of a high-redshift subset (with z > 0.5) of approximately 100 South Pole Telescope SZE selected galaxy clusters. Among these, approximately 40 will be new clusters from the 2011 season, 34 will be new candidates from the 2010 season, and the rest will be candidates requiring further observations. We further request Blanco NEWFIRM Near-IR imaging for optically confirmed clusters with z > 1 as well as for imaging high significance SPT candidates that have not been optically confirmed. With these observations, we can (1) confirm the candidates as galaxy clusters, (2) measure cluster redshifts, (3) image potential z > 1 systems that are not readily apparent in multiband optical followup in NIR, and (4) measure properties and evolution of the galaxy cluster populations. These follow-up observations are central to more detailed optical spectroscopic, weak lensing and X-ray studies. The sample targets will come from an analysis of the multifrequency SPT maps in the first 1800 deg^2 centered on (alpha)=02^h30^m, (delta)=- 50°. We focus on a subsample of candidates with S/N >4.5 and use the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) to prescreen candidates to remove those at z ≤ 0.5. X-ray observations indicate that this signal-to- noise value corresponds to a mass threshold of M~eq4×10^14M_&sun; h^-1.
