We request Blanco Mosaic2 to acquire deep multiband imaging of 125 newly discovered South Pole Telescope SZE selected galaxy clusters. We further request Blanco NEWFIRM Near-IR imaging for those candidates that do not show up in the deep multiband optical images. With these observations, we can (1) confirm the candidates as galaxy clusters, (2) measure cluster redshifts, (3) image potential z>0.9 systems that are not readily apparent in multiband optical follow-up. These follow-up observations also can aid in selecting systems for more detailed optical spectroscopic, weak lensing and X-ray studies. This sample will come from an analysis of the multifrequency SPT maps in the first 500 deg^2 centered on (alpha)=02^h30^m, (delta)=-50° surveyed in 2010. We focus on a subsample of clusters with S/N >4.5. X-ray observations indicate that this signal- to-noise value corresponds to a mass threshold of M~eq5×10^14M_&sun;. Simulations and initial optical follow-up indicate that this sample has a low (<~25%) contamination level. Optical/NIR confirmation and redshift estimation are required for us to use the uniform and approximately mass selected SPT cluster sample to study cosmology.
