Clusters of galaxies provide us with laboratories where galaxy formation and evolution can be studied over a large range in cosmic look- back time. To facilitate the investigation of galaxy cluster evolution, a large statistical sample of galaxy clusters spanning the redshift range from 0< z < 1.5 is required. We propose to use the KPNO 2.1m telescope to acquire deep r'- and z'-band imaging of 14 extended X-ray sources discovered in Chandra images that lack deep optical coverage. These X-ray sources are culled from a large Chandra/NOAO serendipitous survey. With these observations we will determine the nature of the extended X-ray emission and measure cluster redshifts (out to z~ 1.3) using the location of the cluster red- sequence in the color-magnitude plane. Cluster attributes, such as the luminosity function, optical richness, color-magnitude relation, and correlations between optical and X-ray properties will be measured.
