Using the plate collection of the Bruce astrograph of the Landessternwarte Heidelberg-Königstuhl optical brightness variations between 1901 and 1980 have been measured for 21 BL Lac objects north of declination δ = -30°. The observed magnitude index R5B(max), [but not the maximum brightness variation ΔB (max)] is found to be positively correlated with the spectral index at 5 GHz.
