We present the results of extensive CCD photometry taken in 1986 and 1987 as well as WHT FOS spectroscopy taken in 1988 of the low-mass X-ray binary 4U0614+09. We also report the results of a ˜ 14 hr simultaneous optical and X-ray observation. 4U0614+09 exhibited a ˜ 10 d modulation which if periodic may be due to a precessing accretion disc. It also has an unusual optical spectrum in that it only displays the λ4640-4650 Bowen blend in emission and not He II λ4686. The X-ray and the optical fluxes were anticorrelated during the simultaneous observation; we discuss various possible explanations for this behaviour.
