The paper discusses observations of chromospheric and photospheric features which were made using an array of 512 silicon photodiodes mounted in the echelle spectrograph at Sacramento Peak Observatory. It is noted that arrays of photodiodes placed in the focal planes of high-dispersion spectrographs can record chromospheric and photospheric features simultaneously at many wavelengths with high temporal and spatial resolution. Images obtained with a resolution of 1 arcsec are presented and employed to compare features observed in Ca II, H-alpha, and He I emission; magnetograms and tachograms obtained by placing the diodes in the wings of the Fe I line at 8468 A are also included. The magnetic evolution of an active region is described on the basis of similar spectrograms, and relationships between moving magnetic features and chromospheric activity are established. In particular, it is shown that moving magnetic features apparently produce surges in the superpenumbrae of large sunspots.
