A detailed analysis is made of ionospheric effects of solar flares in the nighttime F2-region during periods when heightened emission from the midlatitude F-region was observed from Salyut-6. Attention is given to periods during which the cosmonauts visually observed the flare enhancement of the second emission layer. It is shown that the data can be explained by the ionization and excitation of the F-region by flare UV radiation resonantly scattered in the geocorona.
