The Silicon Pixel Detector (SPD) constitutes the two innermost layers of the Inner Tracking System of the ALICE experiment and it is the closest detector to the interaction point. The SPD has nearly 9.8 × 106 channels and it will operate in a region where the track density could be as high as 50 tracks/cm2. A special effort was made in the designing and construction to reduce the material budget to about 1% X0 per layer. The SPD will also provide a trigger signal within 800 ns latency which will contribute to the L0 trigger definition. In this contribution the SPD running experiences will be presented as well as the readiness of the detector to record the first collisions in LHC.
