A review of examples from King (1977) shows that open loops of the interplanetary magnetic field characterize the development of sources of high-speed streams of the solar wind. Hence, these loops can serve as a sign of the phase of stream initiation as well as a factor in predicting an increase in stream velocity or an expansion (or displacement) of the emission region.
