The Galileo spacecraft made seven close flybys of Io. The acquired data were eventually archived with NASA's Planetary Data System. Data from two of the flybys were lost because of spacecraft malfunction near the closest approach to Io. The magnetic field and particle data from the three of these flybys had previously been analyzed in terms of an interaction between Io's environment and the corotating plasma of Jupiter's magnetosphere. However, major discrepancies remained between such models and observations. Recently, we reported on a new modeling effort that shows that both the plasma interactions in Io's vicinity and an electromagnetic response from a magma ocean in Io contribute equally to the observed magnetic field near Io. We found that induction response from a completely solid mantle model is inadequate to explain the magnetometer observations but a layer of asthenosphere > 50 km in thickness with a rock melt fraction ≥ 20% generates an adequate induction response. After discussing the modeling of the field and plasma data and its significance for planetary research, we will discuss the role of open data (and especially the Planetary Data System) in giving us access to the information required to make this discovery. We further discuss how the delivery of the data can be improved to enable scientists to unearth similar nuggets in future.
