If the topology of space-time is allowed to change, then there may exist an ensemble of large universes connected by wormholes. The probability distribution (partition function) for this system has been calculated by Coleman to be A = exp(iS)exp[exp(iS)], where S is the action of a large universe. He evaluated this expression in the euclidean region obtained by Wick-rotating the time coordinate, in which case the maximum probability is associated with the minimum of the euclidean action Se = -iS, leading to a prediction that the cosmological constant vanishes. It has recently been suggested, however, that the calculation should be performed in the lorentzian region, and then A2 is maximized when S vanishes, providing a realization of the zero-action hypothesis of Pollock. For the higher-dimensional superstring theory, an anisotropic initial configuration is more probable than an isotropic one, partly suggesting why the compactification process occurs. Or, if the classical theory contains an adjustable cosmological constant Λ, then the most probable configuration is that for which Λ = 0, a conclusion in agreement with that of Coleman.
