Since observational selection effects against the detection of supernova remnants (SNR) toward high galactic latitudes cannot be ruled out, we used the existing data to determine a lower limit of detected SNR at high galactic latitudes over a significant portion of the sky and studied theoretically the dependence of the visibility of SNR on the density of the surrounding medium. These investigations lead to an improved z-distribution of SNR and show the dependence of the surface brightness on the gas density.
