The influence of continuous absorption by dust on the efficiency of OH maser sources is investigated. This influence is an indirect one acting on the infrared lines which connect the maser levels with the higher lying states. It is shown by means of a three level model that under certain conditions population inversion is possible even in regions which are optically thick in the infrared line, which is in contrast to the case of no continuous absorption. The maser condition in this case depends on the intensity in the maser line itself. It is satisfied easier for large intensities than for low ones.
