A new type of whistler precursor found on a signal from the Siple VLF transmitter is explained in terms of spectral-choosing backscattering of whistlers by periodic plasma density striations created by counterpropagating transmitter signals in the magnetosphere. At signal amplitudes of 2 mV/m the density modulation is shown to be equal to 0.04 percent, corresponding to a coefficient of whistler backscattering, R = 0.25. The same mechanism can be used to explain 'postcursor' occurrence, assuming that backscattering takes place also for a whistler reflected from the ionosphere during the second pass through the interactionn region.
