An analysis is made of the structure and evolution of a complex of activity (CA) on the sun which produced three large solar flares, so-called magnetic cells with a size of 10-15 deg, were identified. The umbra of the CA (a region of strong, largely vertical magnetic fields), the penumbra (a peripheral region of largely horizontal fields), and the core (a region of continual sunspot formation in the CA umbra notable for rigid rotation) were observed. The evolution of the sunspot area and of sunspot and flare activity is considered. The proposed phenomenological model of CA is interpreted in terms of a 'magnetic tree' scheme suggested by Piddington (1975).
