Assuming the space-charge volume in a point-to-plane gap to be defined by the equation s = a2{hq - (h - z)q}, where z is a vertical co-ordinate relative to an origin inside the point such that the space-charge volume meets the point orthogonally, h the height of the plane above the origin, and s the cross-sectional area of the volume at height z; the [`]shape factor' q is determined experimentally to be nearly 2 for points of various geometry. The maximum lateral dimension of the spacecharge volume is measured from [`]oxidation patches' on the plate at various tip clearances, and the complete shape of the space-charge volume is proposed.
