The rotation of the sun is characterized on the basis of a ray-theory analysis of rotational splitting of the high-frequency acoustic modes observed in the spectral five-minute oscillations by Duvall and Harvey (1982, 1983, and 1984). Expressions permitting the estimation of the depth variation of the angular velocity near the equatorial plane are obtained by inversion of the asymptotic formulas and applied to model-synthesized data and the actual observations; the results are presented in tables and graphs. The findings are shown to be in general agreement with the results of piecewise constant-approximation fitting (Duvall et al., 1984).
