A positive correlation has been found between the variation of cosmic ray intensity at the earth and the variation of polar coronal holes area over the solar cycle, but no satistactory explanation of this correlation has been put forward until now. In the present note it is suggested that such a correlation can be understood on the basis of a recent study (Hewish and Bravo, 1986), in which low-latitude coronal holes - more abundant and active when polar holes reduce their size, and almost absent when polar coronal holes are larger - were shown to be the origin of the major perturbations traveling in the interplanetary medium.
