Magnetometer measurements obtained by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter during the first three dayside periapsis passes indicate a statistically linear relationship between the ionospheric magnetization and the solar wind dynamic pressure, even below the critical pressure for magnetization adopted by Phillips et al. (1984). Similar features in the low-altitude magnetic field structure are found to exist for the whole range of solar wind pressures, in contradiction to previous interpretations. The present data suggest a continuous rather than time-evolving mechanism of generation of ionospheric magnetic fields on Venus.
