Variations in the intensity of 6300 A ionospheric airglow are explained in terms of variations of f0F2, i.e., its time derivative. It is suggested that the airglow is due to recombination of ions caused by atmospheric waves generated by magnetic activity and/or by a local neutral wind effect. This explanation is especially useful in predicting airglow when neutral atmosphere dynamics are not constant with time.
