Auroral X-ray observations obtained by seven collimated X-ray detectors on a balloon and cosmic noise absorption (CNA) measurements from riometer stations within and outside the field of view of the X-ray detectors, are used for a phenomenological study of an electron precipitation event in the post midnight/early morning sector of the auroral zone. Periods of strong spatial gradients of the CNA and almost uniform X-ray intensities were found as well as periods of small CNA gradients and strongly non-uniform X-ray intensities. There is apparently little correspondence between strong spatial gradients of the CNA and the anisotropy of the X-ray intensities. A possible explanation is that the electron precipitation consists of two components: a nearly uniform background and smaller spatial structures (patches). The existence of small (10-20 km) patches is found to have a minute effect on the CNA as measured by a conventional riometer, but the patches may considerably increase the total X-ray fluxes.
