The cyclogram method is used to analyze the time series of the Zurich sunspot relative numbers. During the interval 1700-1983 AD, the amplitude and the frequency variations of the Fourier 11-yr component were obtained in a continuous way along the series. The results are presented in cyclograms which are divided into four distinct time intervals with different characteristics of the periodicities. The second harmonics are considered and the periodicity changes are found to be contemporary to those of the 11-yr cycles. It is shown that in 1903, the periodicity of 5.7 yr abruptly changed, its phase turned through 90 deg, and an 11.4-yr cycle periodicity switched over to a shorter period. It is concluded that intervals of variable periodicities alternate with periods of stable 11.4-yr cycles lasting intervals of the order of one to a few centuries.
