During recent years some authors have repeatedly claimed observations relating short-period seismic noise to comparatively slow deformations of the lithosphere (free oscillations of the Earth, long-period waves from distant earthquakes, solid Earth tides, and microseisms in the period range around several seconds). To investigate this phenomenon, we performed observations and analyses of seismic noise in the frequency band around 30 Hz at a few locations in the U.S.S.R. The results of our search for the effects of this kind are strongly negative.
