Experimental data are shown to effectively demonstrate the close interrelationship between ozone-layer dynamics and processes occurring in the polar ionosphere-magnetosphere system. Measurements of the total ozone concentration near the north geographic pole are reviewed with attention given to concurrent geomagnetic activity. Ozone measurements are also introduced that were taken by aircraft and include ClO and BrO data. The data show that the diurnal variation of O3 density in the ozone cap is different from that in the auroral oval. The difference is shown to be intimately linked to the diurnal variation of total ozone concentration (TOC). The boundary between the auroral oval and the polar cap can be located by means of TOC observations studying diurnal variation from a number of latitudinally spaced stations.
