It is shown that in order to determine zone III (i.e., polar cusp) currents in the case of the southward direction of the interplanetary magnetic field from ground data it is necessary to have detailed knowledge of the equivalent current function and the distribution of ionospheric conductivity. The existing network of high-latitude magnetic stations and the present knowledge of polar-cap conductivity do not make it possible to do this at the present time.
